First, what is mass schooling? Simply stated, mass schooling is a state financed educational system that ensures that ALL children in a society have access to K-12 education. Secondly, what is education? Education, not to be confused with knowledge, is the non-existence of discrimination, poverty, and famine. That being said, mass schooling is like a machine. I am going to use a cotton gin as an example. The purpose of a cotton gin is to remove seeds from large amounts of cotton. In one end, seeded cotton is inserted. On the other end, cotton exits the machine seedless. If the cotton were to come out of the other end with seeds, the cotton gin would be deemed broken because its purpose is not being fulfilled. Now back to mass schooling: think of the children in a society as the cotton. The seeds represent anything in the child's environment that would have an impact on the child's character: parents, economic status, cultural beliefs and traditions (American, Chinese, Kenyan, Brazilian, German, etc). Keeping that in mind, the purpose of mass schooling is to create citizens of the state that contribute to society by making it such that there is no discrimination, poverty, or famine.
